Facade Friday: Roxboro, NC

Since March of 2016, the North Carolina Main Street Program has partnered with UNCG’s Interior Architecture Department and its Center for Community-Engaged Design to provide design assistance to designated Main Street and Small Town Main Street communities across the state. Undergraduate and graduate students are selected to become Main Street Fellows. The Main Street Fellows work with UNCG Interior Architecture Department Professors to complete facade rehabilitation designs and upper story apartment conversions in designated Main Street communities.

Friday Spotlight

Constructed ca. 1925, 210-212 N Main St are two-story commercial buildings, with upper-story residential, in downtown Roxboro, NC. Currently, they are occupied by the Uptown Roxboro Group in order to bring about economic development in the community through means of historic preservation. Although 210 and 212 are similar to each other, they have differing cornices, arrangement of upper story windows, and store fronts. Unlike 210’s pointed cornice, 212 has a crenelated parapet,; however, they both have the same cast concrete coping and decorative brick paneling. One can also see that there are metal cornices right above both of the upper story windows, which have decorative corner blocks. Each building has a unique, more recent storefront with stucco, palladian arched windows, and one recessed entrance.
