2024 NC Main Street Champion

David Smith has dedicated 28 years of service to Asheboro, including almost 16 years as Mayor and 12 years on the City Council. Throughout his tenure, he has provided leadership and vision that have helped propel the Downtown Asheboro Main Street program into a thriving organization.
David spearheaded the development of Bicentennial Park, the centerpiece of Downtown Asheboro. This venue, which hosts city events and various community organizations year-round, serves as a true "third place," fostering stronger connections within the community.
In 2005, at David’s suggestion, the city launched a summer Sunday concert series, which expanded in 2020 to include the Friday night Rock'n in the Park series. This popular series draws thousands of people to downtown annually.
David has also made a personal investment in downtown by purchasing and rehabilitating a building that now houses Full Moon Oyster Bar and two market-rate apartments, with plans for additional tenants. While David recognizes the importance of all of Asheboro, he deeply understands the critical role downtown plays in the overall health of the city, which is evident in his decision-making.
For his exceptional leadership and contributions to the growth of Downtown Asheboro, the city is proud to honor David Smith as its 2024 North Carolina Main Street Champion.
