Denny and Shannon Lazar: Elkin

Writer: StaffStaff

2024 NC Main Street Champion

Denny and Shannon Lazar moved to Elkin in 2015 following Denny’s 32-year career in the Navy, where he served as a fighter pilot, squadron leader, and base commander. Inspired by a 2020 community Master Plan event, they launched the Elkin Vine Line, a winery shuttle business based at the Yadkin Valley Heritage and Trails Visitor Center. On Saturdays, they also manage the center, ensuring it remains open to visitors on weekends.

Over the past four years, their shuttle business has served more than 5,600 clients, with their trained drivers encouraging 75% of customers to shop and dine downtown after their tours—boosting local businesses significantly.

The Lazars’ contributions extend far beyond their business. They hosted a mural artist for a 10-day stay during a downtown art project, sponsored the care and repair of 28 downtown planters, and donated shuttle services for major events, including the Light Up Elkin festival and the North Carolina Main Street Directors meeting in August 2023.

Shannon served three years on the Main Street Advisory Board and worked in downtown retail, actively promoting the community to visitors, while Denny currently serves on the Elkin Tourism and Development Board. In addition, they are restoring a historically significant home in the downtown residential historic district—all while enjoying what they call a “relaxing retirement.”

For their unwavering support and positive influence on downtown, Elkin is honored to recognize Denny and Shannon Lazar as its 2024 North Carolina Main Street Champion.
