2017 Best Historic Rehabilitation Project
Goldsboro, NC
The Goldsboro Drug Company building, c. 1885, located at 101 North Center Street, was purchased by brothers Jim and Jeff Daniels in 2014 after sitting vacant for six years. The owners enlisted the architectural services of Maurer Architecture to develop a sensitive rehabilitation for a new use, utilizing historic tax credits and a facade grant from the City of Goldsboro.
The building is in a prominent, corner location, and was renovated for prime first-floor leasable space and two-upper story residential apartments. The façades were removed and rebuilt as needed, cornices were replaced, tile floors were restored, the mezzanine was repurposed into tenant storage space, and the second-floor apartments now boast large windows that were reinstalled as originally designed.
The total $650,000 acquisition and renovation investment has spurred three more Goldsboro business owners to purchase and renovate buildings in the same block with similar mixed-use development plans.
