Gwendy Michael: Ayden

2024 NC Main Street Champion

Gwendy Michael opened her bakery, Gwendy’s Goodies, in 2015 in downtown Ayden. Her passion for the community quickly turned her into one of Downtown Ayden’s biggest champions. For the past two years, promoting and marketing downtown has been at the heart of her work.

As the leader of the Chamber of Commerce, Gwendy spearheaded the “Que Marks the Spot” campaign, celebrating Ayden’s history of BBQ and showcasing the town as a destination for more than just barbecue. She expanded this initiative by creating custom pig decals for local shop windows, adding a whimsical and business-specific touch to downtown branding.

Her Red Tables Initiative introduced 16 red sidewalk tables outside food and beverage establishments, giving residents and visitors a welcoming place to meet, share a meal, or enjoy Ayden’s signature BBQ. Gwendy also championed efforts to bring art downtown, fostering a positive and creative environment that reflects the town’s vibrant spirit.

Never one to sit on the sidelines, Gwendy helped create the “Collard Zone” during the Ayden Collard Festival, spotlighting collard-themed foods and traditions. She and her family even renovated a downtown building to expand her bakery into a café, where she hosts First Fridays—an evening of pizza, music, and community connection.

For her unwavering dedication, creative initiatives, and the lasting impact she’s made downtown, Ayden is proud to recognize Gwendy Michael as its 2024 North Carolina Main Street Champion.
