Legacy NC Mural #2 | Clinton, NC

Clinton, NC, has become the 2nd mural installment of the "Legacy NC 100 Mural in 100 Counties" initiative. NC Artist, Max Dowdle has completed an impressive mural that pays tribute to John Merrick. The town will have a dedication ceremony for the John Merrick mural on Saturday, October 12th, at 9:30 am. The dedication will kick off Clinton's annual Square Fair, "A Taste of Our Cultures." The mural is located at the corner of Fisher Drive and Vance Street.

About John Merrick:

Born into slavery in 1859 in Sampson County, Merrick became known as the founder of the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, one of the largest and most successful African-American-owned businesses of its time. A historical marker in Downtown Clinton highlights Merrick's significant contributions to the economic empowerment of African Americans and the broader community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, serving as a tribute to his enduring impact and the barriers he overcame in his pursuit of social and economic progress.

The mural was funded by a grant from the Sampson County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Clinton Main Street Program.
