2018 Best Public-Private Partnership in Downtown Revitalization
Goldsboro, NC
In partnership with the National Main Street Center, OneMain Financial created a grant program and awarded six $25,000 Action Grants for innovative community transformation projects across the country. Goldsboro, the first grant recipient, developed a project that would further enhance its economic development strategy as the center for arts and cultural development in Wayne County. The grant monies were used to design and install six asset-based pedestrian crosswalk murals and two large façade murals. The murals represent the authentic heritage and economic drivers of the community. The execution of these projects was celebrated with an all-inclusive public event.
The Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation received 37 design entries. The artists whose designs were selected received a stipend to paint their crosswalk murals at the Made on Main Street event in April 2018. A similar approach was used for the larger wall murals that celebrate Seymour Johnson Airforce Base and the African-American Music Trail. The $52,000 project has generated interest in doing more art-based programs and projects in downtown including music, visual art, and live productions.
